Care instructions Sharry Baby is rightly considered the friendliest fragrant orchid for the home. It is a 'warm to intermediate' plant: it feels good at the temperatures we feel good at, tolerates the air of heated flats better than Cambria-type hybrids, and forgives a late watering. The key is rhythm: steady light, regular watering, timely repotting. The natural step after you have mastered Phalaenopsis. Light: bright indirect light, 15,000-25,000 lux. An east window or a south window with a sheer curtain are ideal; west works if the afternoon sun is filtered. Light green to yellowish leaves mean enough light; glossy dark green means it is lacking. Temperature: 18-28 °C by day, 15-20 °C at night. A 5 °C day-night differential in autumn helps spike formation. Avoid cold draughts from the window in winter and hot air from radiators. Water: water thoroughly when the substrate has dried through two thirds, roughly every 5-7 days in summer and every 10-14 days in winter. Let the water drain completely; never leave the pot standing in a saucer of water. Rainwater or filtered water at room temperature is ideal. Humidity: 40-60% - less than Miltoniopsis or Odontoglossum require. A tray of damp gravel or grouping plants together is enough. Air movement matters more than absolute humidity. Substrate: fine to medium pine bark (6-12 mm) with 10-20% perlite or charcoal. Repot every two years, in spring, right after flowering or when the new pseudobulb has 2-3 cm roots. Feeding: orchid fertiliser at quarter strength, every second watering, from March to October; pause in winter. A flush with clean water once a month removes accumulated salts. Propagation: by division at repotting, with at least three pseudobulbs per piece. Smaller pieces survive but delay flowering by 2-3 years.
