Product Safety Information
Please see the product safety information specific to this product outlined below
The following information is provided by the independent third-party retailer selling this product.
- ✅ PET SAFE PLANT
- Toxicity: Hoya flagellata, including the Silver variety, is NOT classified as toxic to cats, dogs, or other pets. The Hoya genus is generally considered safe. While there is no specific ASPCA toxicity data for this species, it is in the same genus as extensively tested species, such as Hoya carnosa, which are confirmed to be nontoxic. As with any plant, ingestion of large amounts of plant material may cause mild gastrointestinal discomfort.
- Human Safety: Generally nontoxic to humans. Safe around children. Like all Hoya species, this plant produces a milky, latex-like sap when the stems or leaves are cut or damaged. This sap may cause minor skin irritation or contact dermatitis in sensitive individuals. Wear gloves when cutting or taking cuttings. Wash hands thoroughly after contact with sap. Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes.
- Leaf Texture: The leaves of Hoya flagellata 'Silver' have a distinctive, rough, sandpaper-like texture that is unusual among houseplants. While this is simply a natural surface characteristic and poses no chemical hazard, the rough texture is noticeable to the touch. This is not a sign of disease or pests – it is a defining characteristic of the species.
- Fragrance Note: The flowers produce a delicate, light and generally well-tolerated fragrance. The flowers are small, appear in modest clusters (up to 15 per umbel) and last for about 4 days. The intensity of the fragrance is low compared to many other Hoya species, making this species suitable for people sensitive to odors. The flowers have an unusual behavior, partially closing at night and reopening in the morning.
